The European Union and the United Arab Emirates have officially commenced trade negotiations, as both parties look to diversify market opportunities in response to U.S. tariff measures.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed to initiate discussions following a request from UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan during a phone conversation held on Thursday.
“They are seeking a bilateral free trade agreement, and we are fully open to this,” von der Leyen stated in an interview with the Financial Times. “We aim to finalize it within a matter of months.”
