Turkish Legal Translation Services

Alafranga has provided Turkish legal translation since 2002, for language service providers managing multilingual caseloads and for European law firms whose matters touch Turkish jurisdiction, Turkish counterparties or Turkish regulatory bodies. The work covers contracts, court filings and judgments, powers of attorney, corporate and regulatory documents, and the evidence that accompanies cross-border disputes.

Turkish law has its own architecture. The Civil Code and the Code of Obligations derive from Swiss law, commercial law shows a strong German influence, and the system as a whole follows the civil law tradition rather than common law. Concepts that appear equivalent in English often are not: there is no direct Turkish counterpart to “consideration” or to the common law trust, and a literal rendering can change the legal effect of a clause. Turkish courts conduct proceedings exclusively in Turkish, and documents from abroad are generally accepted only as notarised translations prepared by a sworn translator.

▮Why Turkish Legal Translation Requires Specialist Knowledge
Turkish is an agglutinative language, meaning legal concepts that require several words in English or German are often compressed into a single suffixed Turkish term. A mistranslation is not always a wrong word. It can be a missing suffix that changes the legal meaning entirely.

Beyond the language itself, Turkish contract law, commercial law, and procedural rules contain terminology with no direct equivalent in European legal systems. Turkey's legal framework draws on the Swiss Civil Code and the German Commercial Code — but decades of domestic legislation, Constitutional Court rulings, and regulatory practice have produced a body of law that requires contextual knowledge, not just linguistic competence.

For cross-border matters, this matters in both directions. European companies entering the Turkish market need contracts, compliance documents, and regulatory submissions that read correctly to Turkish legal readers — not translated documents that sound foreign. Turkish companies operating in Europe face the same challenge in reverse.
