▮Why Turkish Technical Translation Matters for European Business
Turkey is the EU’s fifth-largest trading partner. In 2024, the total value of EU–Turkey trade in goods exceeded €210 billion, a record high, built on a Customs Union that has been in force since 1996. Around 41% of Turkey’s exports go to the EU, and roughly a third of its imports come from EU member states. This isn’t abstract economics. It means European companies are operating in Turkey every day, selling machinery, building factories, supplying components, running joint ventures. And Turkish manufacturers are exporting vehicles, industrial equipment and steel into the EU at growing volumes. Every one of these operations generates technical documentation that needs to work in both directions.

▮The industries driving EU–Turkey trade
  • Automotive: Turkey is Europe’s fourth-largest vehicle manufacturer. Companies like Ford, Toyota, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz operate production plants across the country. Turkish automotive exports to the EU reached $30 billion in 2025. Every vehicle, component and assembly line comes with manuals, specifications and compliance documentation that must be translated accurately.
  • Machinery and industrial equipment: Germany alone imports over $3.4 billion in machinery and mechanical appliances from Turkey. Turkish manufacturers supply precision machinery, HVAC systems and heavy industrial components to European buyers. Operating manuals, safety data sheets and installation guides travel with every shipment.
  • Electrical and electronic systems: Power grid equipment, home appliances, automation systems — Turkey is a significant supplier to the EU in these categories. Technical documentation, UI interfaces and compliance certificates all require translation.
  • Construction and infrastructure: Turkish construction firms operate across Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. Project specifications, safety documentation and regulatory filings need to be translated into and out of Turkish for every market they enter.
  • Textiles and manufacturing: While not always thought of as “technical,” textile manufacturing involves machinery documentation, quality control specifications, chemical safety data sheets and CE compliance — all of which require precise translation.
The EU–Turkey Customs Union means that most industrial goods cross the border tariff-free. But tariff-free doesn’t mean language-free. Every product, every machine, every piece of safety documentation still needs to speak the right language, accurately.

Turkish is structurally different from every European language your team works with. It’s an agglutinative language, meaning a single Turkish word can carry what English expresses in an entire phrase. Suffixes stack to convey tense, possession, negation and case all at once. Word order follows a subject–object–verb pattern, the opposite of English.

In everyday content, these differences are manageable. In technical content, they’re where errors happen:
  • A measurement tolerance mistranslated in a machinery manual isn’t a language issue, it’s a safety issue.
  • An ambiguous instruction in an installation guide doesn’t just confuse the reader, it risks the equipment.
  • A compound technical term split incorrectly in Turkish changes the meaning entirely.
  • Regulatory filings with inconsistent terminology won’t just look unprofessional, they may not pass review.
