The Environment Agency Austria (Umweltbundesamt GmbH) was established in 1985 and is the environmental specialist institution of the Austrian Federal Government. ▮The Brief
In 2012, the Environment Agency Austria engaged Alafranga to support two parallel workstreams: simultaneous interpretation for international events, and multilingual translation of country-level environmental reports for distribution across European and North African markets.
The work was not a single project — it was a concentrated collaboration across six assignments delivered within a twelve-month period, covering multiple language combinations and content types under tight institutional deadlines.
▮Scope of Work
- Simultaneous Interpretation
Two international events required full simultaneous interpretation coverage. The first, held in Vienna in June 2012, was a two-day event requiring interpreters across multiple language combinations. The second was held in Skopje, requiring coordinated on-site interpretation in a multilateral setting — consistent with the Agency's institutional capacity building work in the Western Balkans. - Simultaneous interpretation
at this level demands interpreters who understand not only the language but the subject matter: environmental policy, regulatory frameworks, climate reporting, and the vocabulary of EU environmental law. Generic conference interpreters do not carry this knowledge. Subject-matter fit is not optional — it determines whether the interpretation is useful to the audience. - Document Translation
Four translation assignments covered environmental country reports and institutional documents across English, French, and Russian. The largest single assignment — country reports covering Morocco (FR>EN) and Egypt (EN>FR) — involved technical environmental assessment content requiring both linguistic precision and familiarity with the frameworks used by international environmental bodies.
